Harvest Wreath Making Workshop

Learn to build and decorate an autumnal wreath from scratch! Greensgrow Farms will supply a reusable grapevine wreath form and natural decorations like ferns, dried chinese lanterns, and yarrow. Everyone will make their own 14 inch wreath to take home or give as a gift!

Be part of a living installation created by photographer Shawn Theodore, listen to the lush soundscapes of musician Marina Murayama, watch a modern take on traditional Asian dance by Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers, hear music by Lizzie Harp that disrupts stereotypes of classical music, see performance artist Sherman Fleming bring a personal story about a drive through the American South to life, and end the night moving to a set by turntable master DJ Roli Rho.

 

New Voice: Poetry Reading

Artist Talk – Streets Dept Walls

Join curator Conrad Benner for a talk with the #StreetsDeptWalls artists! Streets Dept Walls is a celebration of art, the city of Philadelphia, and ourselves! Featuring a collection of 10 new temporary murals by 11 Philly artists, the project works to honor Philly’s status as an arts capitol and a place for creatives. Come hear from the artists and learn more about their lives, their art, and their careers thus far – not to mention their murals for Streets Dept Walls.

In conjunction with Colored People Time: Banal Presents, this screening presents the work of two experimental Black female filmmakers attend to the multidimensional lives of Black women.

In The Giverny Document (2019), director Ja’Tovia Gary shifts between contemporary Harlem, New York and Claude Monet’s gardens in Giverny, France and combines documentary-style street interviews, abstracted montage techniques of Giverny, and archival footage of Nina Simone’s 1976 performance at the Montreux Jazz Performance to form a complex portrait of Black femininity. For A Love Song for Latasha (2019), director Sophia Nahli Allison combs through oral histories and archival material to combine past and present in an experimental hybrid documentary form, shedding light on the life of Latasha Harlins, the 15-year old girl whose murder in South Central Los Angeles in 1991 was a leading catalyzer for the 1992 L.A. Riots.

Following the screening, Sophia Nahli Allison will join curator and cultural producer Maori Karmael Holmes in conversation.

Natural Dyes Workshop

Get lost in a seductive sea of natural dye! In this workshop you will learn how to create unique fabric and yarn using the natural dyeing processes. You will make a dye bath while learning Shibori resist techniques to create unique patterns with this or any other dyes. Your new skills can be used to make your own fabric, yarn or as an over dye for garments.
